The show depicts the daily lives of Dave and Vicky and their three children, Hillary, Larry, and Mike, on Long Island, New York, dealing with normal family issues. He is often portrayed as insensitive and cynical, and sometimes as a paranoid, overprotective and hypocritical bigot. Dave is constantly scolded and insulted by Larry for always picking on him. It is established toward the end of season one that Dave is the way he is because he had a father who constantly badgered him. Dave's wife Vicky is an attractive Italian-American Catholic part-time receptionist at a doctors' office.

Dave fears Hillary's going to have sex, so he plans a family event to keep her from going out. Elsewhere, Kenny tries to sabotage Larry's relationship. Three teens cause havoc for their parents, and vice versa, in a brash family-oriented sitcom that employs a confessional space for characters to vent their meant-to-be-humorous feelings.
The series was originally transmitted on the ITV network in Britain between 31 October 1973 and 8 May 1974, and has been shown around the world. It was first shown in the US in syndication on various stations in 1974. WOR in New York aired the series in the mid-1970s, although episodes were edited both for graphic content and to include sufficient commercial breaks. PBS station WNET in New York broadcast the series unedited and in its entirety in 1982 as did WGBH in the late 1980s.

Isaacs asked Noble Frankland, director of the Imperial War Museum, to list fifteen main campaigns of the war and devoted one episode to each. The remaining eleven episodes are devoted to other matters, such as the rise of Nazi Germany, home life in Britain and Germany, the experience of occupation of the Netherlands, and the Holocaust. The series ends with Laurence Olivier saying "Remember". Jeremy Isaacs had been inspired to look at the production of a long-form documentary series about the Second World War following the BBC's broadcast of its series The Great War in 1964. As a consequence, Isaacs was determined to have his programme be as authentic as possible.
Dave, and to a lesser extent Vicky, often treat Larry's flamboyancy with wary eyes. The youngest child, the pubescent 14-year-old Mike , must deal with issues such as masturbation, dating and underage gambling. His character is portrayed as tougher and more cynical than Larry's. Kenny and his boyfriend are barred from attending the Sadie Hawkins dance. When Dave protests, Principal Fink learns Kenny is living with the Golds and threatens to notify child services.

After watching "An Inconvenient Truth," Dave becomes obsessed with saving the environment. Meanwhile, Hillary prepares for a college admissions interview. Dave decides to take a hands-off approach to parenting after catching Hillary in a lie. Larry runs away from home after Vicky tells him he can't go to the Ice Capades. Meanwhile, Hillary's classmate spreads rumors about her, so Dave concocts a revenge scheme. Dave and Vicky question the strength of their marriage after friends file for divorce; tensions escalate when Vicky covers for Hillary and allows her to go on a ski trip.
In the programme The Making of "The World at War", included in the DVD set, Jeremy Isaacs explains that priority was given to interviews with surviving aides and assistants rather than recognised figures. The most difficult person to locate and persuade to be interviewed was Heinrich Himmler's adjutant Karl Wolff. During the interview, he admitted to witnessing a mass execution in Himmler's presence. Isaacs later expressed satisfaction with the content of the series, noting that if it had not been secret, he would have added references to British codebreaking at Bletchley Park. In a list of the 100 Greatest British Television Programmes which was compiled by the British Film Institute during 2000, voted for by industry professionals, The World at War ranked 19th, the highest-placed documentary on the list. The show originally received negative reviews from critics, scoring a 28 out of 100 on Metacritic and 24% on Rotten Tomatoes.
I have been waiting for the premiere of this show for weeks, and I am more than pleased. While it is very true that the "dysfunctional family" premise has been done before, it is still a highly entertaining premise, which is why it has been successful for so very long and never gone stale. The "cutaways" are very reminiscent of Titus, the comedic timing is excellent, the cast is wonderful. I have never been a huge Michael Rapaport fan, but I have always respected his talent as an actor.
While she asked Zaraki to bless her during her death, he simply kept begging her to stay alive, however, that was the end for the first Kenpachi. Only moments later, Zaraki Kenpachi heard the voice of his Zanpakuto, as he was set to learn its name for the first time. With their battle about to reach its conclusion, Yachiru Unohana activated her Bankai Minazuki. She smeared her Zanpakuto with her blood, following which the battlefield turned red and Zaraki's flesh started melting away. This moment helped him unlock all of his sealed-away powers, which was enough to deal a final blow to the first Kenpachi.
Dave also gives Hillary advice on getting back together with her old boyfriend, which only alienates Hillary and exhilarates Dave. The World at War was commissioned by Thames Television in 1969. The government had halved its levy on television advertising revenue, with the proviso that the money which the independent television companies saved must be reinvested in programmes. Isaacs persuaded Thames to use the money to pay for the production of his Second World War documentary. The series took four years to produce, at a cost of £900,000 (equivalent to £11,600,000 in 2021), a record for a British television series. Since Dave is completely opposed to having another child, he helps her job hunt. Meanwhile, Larry enters a spelling bee, and lazy Mike buys Hillary's book reports from the days when she got good grades. With Vicky working, Dave crumbles with his added responsibilities, particularly a visit to the principal's office regarding Mike, who gets suspended.
The Danish channel DR1 first broadcast the series from August 1976 to February 1977 and it was repeated on DR2 in December 2006 and January 2007. The History Channel in Japan began screening the series in its entirety in April 2007. The Military History Channel in the UK broadcast the series over the weekend of 14 and 15 November 2009. The Military Channel in the United States aired the series in January 2010, and has shown it regularly since. BBC Two in the UK transmitted a repeat run of the series starting on 5 September 1994 at teatime. In 2011, the British channel Yesterday started a showing of the series and it has been shown continuously since.
Dave is conflicted about whether he should tell Vicky's mom about her fiancé's indiscretions. Meanwhile, Kenny goes on a date with Hillary's ex-boyfriend. Larry wears Dave's jacket to school, and ends up getting suspended after marijuana is discovered in the pocket. When Kenny comes out of the closet, Dave encourages him to tell his parents.
Vicky, meanwhile, forgets to register Larry for Shakespeare camp, putting Larry in an awkward situation, while Dave and Mike take up online poker. The series frequently breaks the fourth wall between segments of an episode, during which Dave or other characters deliver a rant or other comment directly relating to the scene. Larry is prescribed medication for social anxiety but refuses to take the pills. Meanwhile, Hillary prepares for the prom, and Mike takes a fencing class.
